Regional method of teaching geography

A Method of Teaching is a process of planning, guiding, sharing and evaluating learning with a group of students. It is a procedure the teacher follows to make learning easy and effective.

It concentrates on the various regions of the world. It encompasses study of the various details of these regions as under. A variety of teaching aids can be used to make these lessons more interesting and for better retention. It is one of the best methods as it explores the entire existence of that region.

State -> country -> neighbouring country -> natural regions -> various continents

Each of these regions is studied with respect to location, extent, boundaries, climate, vegetation, animal life, resources, human life, recent developments, food, clothing, shelter, occupations, culture, trade, transport and economy.

Eg. Std 7 – Japan, South Africa, Italy, Tanzania, USA, etc.

Merits of regional method of teaching geography

  1. The method is scientific, orderly and systematic.
  2. It gives a better understanding of geography and economics.
  3. Encourages to explore new regions and countries through independent study.
  4. There is a scope to use variety of teaching aids.
  5. Correlated the physical, natural, social, economical and other areas of man’s life.
  6. Helps to understand environment and its impact on human and natural wildlife.
  7. It develops ability to reason logically and analytically. Eg. Hot climate so people will wear cotton clothes
  8. Leads to acceptance of other cultures and develops inter-regional tolerance.

Demerits of regional method of teaching geography

  1. In order to cover broader regions, we often neglect the smaller ones.
  2. Teacher should have extensive knowledge about that region.
  3. It is not possible to cover each and every country.
