Lecture method
A Method of Teaching is a process of planning, guiding, sharing and evaluating learning with a group of students. It is a procedure the teacher follows to make learning easy and effective.
There are several methods of teaching Geography of which we will see the Lecture Method.
It is a traditional method in which the Teacher delivers a formal talk to the students. It is a technique of description, explanation and clarification. The Teacher does all the talking hence it is his duty to encourage the children ask as many questions as possible.
Merits
- The portion can be comfortably covered as occurrence of external interruptions are minimal.
- The Teacher can use teaching aids to make the topic interesting.
- The Teacher can plan according to her own speed of delivery.
- It is less expensive.
- The spoken word is more effective than the written word.
- It improves the learning by listening skills of the pupil.
- It is good to use while clarifying concepts.
- Good for introducing the topic and concisely summarizing the lesson or correcting ideas.
Limitations
- Useful only for higher classes and not for small children.
- The students are passive learners so it is not a natural way of learning.
- It may lead to boredom and reduce attention span if their interest is not developed.
- Puts greater load on the Teacher as she must have thorough knowledge and be fully prepared.
- It can be monotonous, repetitive and dull and harmful if used extensively.
