Union Territories of India 2022

As in 2022, there are total 8 Union Territories in India which are governed by Administrator/Lieutenant Governor on behalf of the President of India. Puducherry and NCT of Delhi are the only 2 Union Territories which have Chief Ministers.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Andaman and Nicobar Islands is located at the juncture where the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal merge. Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the first Union Territory of Independent India. It is administered by Lieutenant Governor appointed by the President of India.

Chandigarh is a Union Territory and also the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. Though Chandigarh is the capital of Haryana and Punjab the two Indian states, but it is governed by the central government. President of India appoint an administrator for administration of Chandigarh.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu

With effect from 26 January 2020, the two Union Territories Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli were merged together to form a new Union Territory called Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. President of India appoint an administrator for administration of this Union Territory.

NCT of Delhi

Delhi was a Union Territory from 1956 to 1992 and on 1 February 1992, it was redefined as the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Delhi has partially state-like functions as it has a elected legislative assemblies and the executive councils of ministers.

Jammu and Kashmir

On 31 October 2019 status of state was was stripped of from Jammu and Kashmir and it is a Union Territory now. The former state i.e Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories named Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir. The state is administered by Lieutenant Governor appointed by the President of India.

Ladakh

Ladakh become Union Territory on 31 October 2019 and is bifurcated from the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Ladakh has two districts named Kargil and Leh. Ladakh is administered by Lieutenant Governor appointed by the President of India. Ladakh Union Territory is without Legislature.

Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep is the smallest Union Territory of India. It was formerly a part of Madras which is known as Chennai now. Lakshadweep was redefined as a Union Territory on 1 November 1956 after bifurcation from the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

Initially it was called the Laccadive, Minicoy and Aminidivi islands and on 1 November 1973 it was officially named as Lakshadweep . President of India appoint an administrator for administration of this Union Territory.

Puducherry

Puducherry became a Union Territory on 1 November 1954 when French possessions in India were de facto transferred to the Indian Union. Puducherry however became an integral part of India in year 1963.
