How many states are there in India?

India being a federal constitutional republic is governed under a parliamentary system consisting of 28 states and 8 union territories.
As per Indian constitution – The territory of India shall consist of: The territories of the states, The Union territories and any territory that may be acquired.
India is 7th largest country in the world. It is not easy to manage such a big country from only one location, keeping this in mind Indian constitution has given power to the central government to form states. These states are headed by the Chief Minister. India is a democratic republic with a Parliamentary system of Government.
How many states and union territories are there in India
With effect from October 31st 2019, the state of Jammu and Kashmir has been officially bifurcated into two Union Territories (UT) i.e Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. As of now (2022) after the Jammu and Kashmir became a union territory on 6 August 2019, there are 28 states and 8 union territories in India.

India has 28 states and 8 union territories with effect from 26th of January 2020.. The Union Territories of Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli both have now become a single union territory. This decision was passed by the Parliament through a Bill on 26 Jan, 2020.

India is a federal Union and is divided into 28 states and 8 union territories which are further subdivided into districts smaller administrative divisions to maintain democracy, peace among people , coordination and better administration of the governance.
