Fundamental duties

The original format of the constitution was not containing Fundamental Duties. Fundamental right were added but fundamental duties were left. Later, Fundamental Duties were added in 1976, upon recommendation of the Swaran Singh Committee, that was constituted by Indira Gandhi just after the declaration of national emergency, to study and amend the constitution.

This committee was under the Chairmanship of Sardar Swaran Singh, India’s longest-serving union cabinet minister. Based on his recommendations, it was found to have fundamental duties to be introduced.

Based on recommendations of Sardar Swaran Singh committee, new Part-IV-A was added in constitution which explain fundamental duties, what are fundamental duties, how many fundamental duties are there in Indian constitution.

Part-IV-A of Indian constitution consists of only one Article 51-A was added to the constitution by the 42nd Amendments-

  • To abide by constitution and respect its ideal and institutions, the National Flag and National Anthem.
  • To cherish and follow the noble ideas which inspired our national struggle for freedom.
  • To uphold and protect the sovereignity, unity and integrity of India
  • To defend the country and render national service when called upon to do so.
  • To promote harmony and the sprit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India transcending religious, linguistic and regional or sectional diversities to practises derogatory to the dignity of women.
  • To value and preserve the right heritage of our composite culture.
  • To protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers and wildlife and to have compassion for living creature.
  • To develop the scientific temper, humanism and the sprit of inquiry and reform.
  • To safeguard public property and to abjure violence.
  • To strive towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity so that the nation constantly rises to higher levels of endeavour and achievements.

The 11th fundamental duty which was added to this list is:

To provide opportunities for education to children between 6-14 years of age, and duty as parents to ensure that such opportunities are being awarded to their child.

How many fundamental duties are there in Indian constitution

There are 11 fundamental duties in Indian constitution which look at the crisis in Indian society and serve as a source of protection for the liberty of the people.
