What is the National bird of India ?

The Indian Peacock, who’s scientific name is Pavo cristatus, is the National Bird of India. It is a colourful, beautiful and swan-sized bird. It has fan-shaped crest of feathers, a white patch under the eye with a long, slender neck. With a glistening blue breast and neck and a spectacular bronze-green tail of around 200 elongated feathers the male of the species is more colourful than the female who is not having that beautiful tail.

Why Indian Peacock was declared as National bird of India?

The national bird represents the fauna of that country. It should uphold certain features, core qualities and values of that nation it belongs to.

Being entirely a part of Indian custom and culture hence the Indian peacock was declared the National bird of India in 1963. Indian peacock is a symbol of grace and beauty. The Peacock is present across the country, and all people of India are familiar with the bird.

No other country had adapted Peacock as its national bird either.
