What is CSMA

What is CSMA full form?

CSMA stands for “Carrier Sense Multiple Access” – a network access protocol. It is used to facilitate the sharing of a communication medium between multiple devices. It is a form of contention-based network access control protocol, where every node in the network gets an equal opportunity to access the shared media.

How Does CSMA Work?

CSMA works by detecting if a carrier (data signal) is already present on the shared communication medium and then waits until that carrier is gone before transmitting. If two or more devices attempt to send a signal at the same time, they will collide, setting the signal strength of both devices to null and forcing the devices to wait and try again a bit later.

Advantages of CSMA

CSMA is a relatively simple and efficient network access control protocol that preserves fair access to a shared communication medium. It also encourages the efficient use of network resources as devices with lower priority will have to wait until the network is available to send their data.

It also prevents collisions as each device in the network will sense the presence of a carrier before attempting to send a signal, ensuring data can be reliably received in the absence of significant disturbances in the network.

Disadvantages of CSMA

Despite its advantages, CSMA has a major drawback in that it is a relatively slow network access control protocol. This is mainly due to the fact that device must wait for a period of time before attempting to send a signal, as it must sense the presence of a carrier before attempting to send a signal.

This means that CSMA is not suitable for networks that require a short latency time or frequent two-way communications.

Conclusion

CSMA is a popular and reliable network access control protocol that can be used in networks that have low delay requirements and do not require frequent two-way communications. It is a simple and efficient method of sharing a medium between multiple devices, ensuring fair access and reliable data transmission.
