What is ITP?

ITP, or idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, is a bleeding disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks its own platelets. Platelets are blood cells that helps the blood clot. When there are not enough platelets, people with ITP may bruise or bleed easily.

Types of ITP

There are two main types of ITP:

  • Chronic ITP: This is the most common type of ITP and can last for many years. ITP is more common in adults than in children.
  • Acute ITP: This type of ITP is usually short-term and goes away on its own within a few weeks or months. ITP is more common in children than in adults.

Symptoms of ITP

The most common symptoms of ITP are:

  • Bruising easily
  • Bleeding from the gums or nose
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Blood in the stool or urine
  • Petechiae, which are small, red or purple dots on skin

Diagnosis and treatment of ITP

ITP is diagnosed with a blood test called a complete blood count (CBC). A CBC measures the number of all types of blood cells, including platelets. If a CBC shows a low platelet count, the doctor may order other tests to rule out other causes of low platelets.

There is no cure for ITP, but there are treatments that can help to increase the platelet count and reduce bleeding. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of the ITP and the patient’s age and overall health.

Treatment options for ITP include:

  • Medications: There are a number of medications that can be used to increase the platelet count or reduce platelet destruction.
  • Splenectomy: The spleen is an organ that helps to filter the blood and remove old or damaged cells. In some cases, removing the spleen can help to improve the platelet count and reduce bleeding in people with ITP.

If you have ITP, it is important to work with your doctor to develop a treatment plan that is right for you. With proper treatment, most people with ITP can live long and healthy lives.
