What does NRI stand for?
NRI stands for Non-Resident Indian. Essentially, it refers to an Indian citizen who is residing in another country. People might move abroad for various reasons including education, employment, or even leisure. According to the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, India ranks second in the world for its number of NRIs, following China.
In simpler terms:
If an individual spends more than 182 days outside of India within a given year, they are considered an NRI. Being an NRI comes with specific income tax rules. It’s important to note that an NRI still holds an Indian passport and retains their Indian citizenship. Often, NRIs are also referred to as “Overseas Indians” or “Expats.”
NRI Types:
There are mainly three categories of NRIs:
- Officials from central or state government and employees of public sectors living abroad.
- Indians who work for international entities like the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United Nations Organization (UNO), or the World Bank.
- Indians who live in foreign countries for education, employment, business purposes, or even holidays.
