EXIM stands for the Export-Import Bank of the United States. It’s the U.S. government’s official tool to help American businesses trade with other countries. Think of EXIM as a safety net when regular banks don’t provide the money for international deals, EXIM can step in and help.

How does EXIM help?

EXIM offers various products and services to help businesses, both big and small. This can be for making products, selling them, getting technology from abroad, or even investing outside the U.S.

What’s EXIM’s main aim?

EXIM has three main goals:

  1. Boost U.S. products and services without costing U.S. taxpayers any money.
  2. Make sure goods labeled “Made in America” can compete in international markets.
  3. Help in creating and supporting jobs in the U.S.

A bit of EXIM’s history:

  • It started in 1934, thanks to an order from President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
  • The bank’s first big move was lending $3.8 million to Cuba in 1935 so they could buy U.S. silver bars.
  • By 1945, the U.S. Government decided to manage it separately.
  • The bank has to get permission to continue every 4-5 years. This was almost an issue in 2015, but it got the green light to run until September 2019.
