In 1825, Antoine Jerome Balard discovered bromine by analyzing the mineral water of Montpellier. Initially, he thought the red coloring of the water was caused by iron oxide, but realized it was due to a previously unknown chemical.

He called it muride, which derived from the Greek word for “stench”. In 1871, British chemist, George Gore, named the element bromine after the Greek word, bromos, meaning ‘stench’.
